Cultural variations in Seed Accelerators

The attempt to replicate the accelerator model from Silicon Valley to other parts of the world have met with mixed success.  We have outlined the factors that allegedly need to be in place for the start-ups to succeed:

  • The technology environment,
  • the regulatory environment,
  • the social environment (a general entrepreneurial culture),
  • the infrastructure or physical environment
  • capital
  • networks of people (customers)
  • culture
  • people
  • practices

One needs to choose a location that has the technology, regulations and social enviroment, but one can engineer the physical environment and provide both capital and networks.  The iffiest parts have to do with culture, the people and the practices.  Some of Silicon Valley aspects do not easily fit into native cultures, such as accepting or even valuing failure, and openness, networking, and collaboration.
